As can be seen on the RTK Coverage Map on this website, the Departments of Transportation in many states offer Slingshot-compatible RTK corrections. The naming of the service varies by state, but some of the more common names are:
- CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Stations)
- RTN (Real Time Network)
- SRTN (Spatial Real Time Network)
- RTVRN (Real Time Virtual Reference Network)
Regardless of the name, the intention and purpose are the same, to provide RTK-grade corrections to aide the DOT in the building and maintenance of roadways. As of this writing, these corrections have been free for any users who register for an account. Because of this, many other industries have taken advantage of this taxpayer-funded infrastructure to obtain centimeter level positioning information. A sampling of additional users includes Land Surveyors, GIS analysts and yes, Growers.
For Growers in covered regions, these RTK corrections offer the ability to improve farming efficiency in a very cost effective manner. Unfortunately, getting set up to work with these networks can be intimidating for most people, myself included. For this reason, some brilliant folks at Slingshot central have devised a solution that helps in this regard, eliminating many of the configuration hurdles normally associated with getting connected to one of these networks. The result - a simple web-page.
The user-friendly and password protected Slingshot website allows Slingshot Field Hub owners the ability to very easily select the CORS network of their choice. The settings are then simply and effortlessly sent to the Slingshot field hub over the cellular network.
If you’re thinking of taking advantage of RTK corrections as part of your farming practice, I encourage you to seek out your nearest Slingshot dealer for a demonstration
